Introducing...
Tom Hancock, Creative Director
Welcome to our Meet the Team series where we introduce the team behind the work. Find out what they love about their careers and just as importantly what makes them tick outside of work too.
Tom is our creative whizz – everything from our website to our branding is overseen by him, as well as our bespoke client projects. In his near-decade at Fourwalls he’s managed many exciting projects and continues to innovate – all while keeping a good sense of humour in the face of moving deadlines, goal posts, and offices.
What would be your superpower and why?
Flight. A pretty obvious one but how cool would that be?!
How do you take your tea/coffee?
Flat white or double espresso please.
Tell us about your pets.
Deep breath… Luna the sprocker, Pepper the cat, Moo the rabbit, Barbara the chicken (she’s the last of her sisters sadly but now best mates with the rabbit) and some fish. Just a few!
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
Collaborating. I get very excited talking through ideas and possibilities with the talented and passionate people I am grateful to work with.
What’s the best place you’ve travelled to, and why?
Best: Nepal. I was lucky enough to visit twice as a teenager and it was formative. Too many reasons why to mention in detail but the people and the culture are just so welcoming and warm, then you look up and you’re surrounded by beautiful landscapes. Worst: Padstow just after Covid and before people started flying again, it was heaving.
Any guilty pleasures?
Tennis. Not sure that’s a guilty pleasure but sometimes (it’s suggested that) I play too much which can lead to guilt. Would play every day if I could.
What’s your earliest Fourwalls memory?
First day being taken to the caff next to our old office for a fry up to welcome me to the team. I felt very welcome… and full.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Preparing for my gold watch at Fourwalls?!
What book changed your life?
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle helped me navigate a particularly stressful period of my life and led me into meditating more regularly, which I can recommend to everyone. Atomic Habits by James Clear is a great one for practical advice for building systems and routines rather than solely working to goals. Finally, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, it was the first ‘grown up’ book my Dad read to me and I was terrified of his Gollum voice. It led me into more widely exploring the wonder of fiction and how entire worlds can be created with words and a bit of imagination.
If you won the lottery, what would you do first?
Take my family travelling (more), obviously within my allotted holiday allowance from Fourwalls!
What career advice would you give your younger self?
Creatively, sometimes it’s better that things exist than are perfect. Over doing it with deliberation and revising before launch can impact relevance of timing. So just do it, put it out there and refine as you go. Focus on always learning and improving each day. Trust your level.
